May Movie Recap
Part 1 of 2
Once again it’s time to do a quick roundup of the movies I watched in the prior month. With any luck, I’ll have applied myself to get this out before the middle of the month. (Unlike last time.) If by some strange chance this is the sort of thing you like, you could
but this sort of thing will never get hidden behind a Substack paywall. So if you’d rather not, it won’t make a lick of difference. Here’s last month:
Onward to May!
The End of Summer - 1961 - 4 of 5
One of Ozu’s last films, it’s an odd movie of his in that it deals more with death than most of his work. Not my favorite of his, but still a great movie. Also unusual for having a couple (very, very minor) speaking parts for Westerners.
Iron Man 3 - 2013 - 2.5 of 5
It’s perfectly adequate and unmemorable as a superhero film. Boyo’s first time, otherwise I’d never have seen it again after the first watch.
Nanny McPhee and the Big Bang - 2010 - 1.5 of 5
Absolutely awful follow-up to the decent first Nanny McPhee film. This one doesn’t feel unique; comes off feeling like a cheap Mary Poppins knock-off. Younger boyo’s choice for a movie night.
Klute - 1971 - 2.5 of 5
Completely forgot why I wanted to watch this by the time my hold arrived from the library. Wasn’t great; ‘70s New York City looks like an absolute third world country and the mystery was undercut by the film itself giving it away early. (Apropos of nothing, I hate that the poster image has a slight tilt to it.)
Amadeus - 1984 - 3.5 of 5
Watched it for the podcast.
Mr. Nice Guy - 1997 - 3 of 5
Decent Chan flick; getting to the back half of his career so the stunts and fights are losing a little pep. The ladder fight is still top-notch, though, and the stilts scene was an interesting one. Watched with the elder boyo since I reckon he’s old enough for Chan films now.
The Girl Who Leapt Through Time - 2006 - 3.5 of 5
Rewatch with the kiddos; I’m a sucker for time travel.
Strange Days - 1995 - 2 of 5
Impulse watch off Criterion because the description I read was intriguing. Ended up as a disappointment since I had expectations. Fairly prescient about the future in some limited ways, though like most films it was too optimistic(?) about how fast tech would advance.
A Soldier’s Story - 1984 - 2 of 5
Watched for the podcast.
Second half of the list in the next post!
